Divinely Ordered

Keane and I found out we were pregnant 3 days after moving back to Colorado in August. After discovering our exciting news, I felt my work options were limited since I would be staying home with our baby once she arrived. It was unlikely any employer would readily hire me knowing I would be quitting in 7 months, but I was determined to earn some income for our family while I still could. I hit the ground running and applied for any and all jobs I could find.

I have taught preschool off and on throughout the years and I knew at the very least I could sub at a school until the baby came. I interviewed with a wonderful early childhood center and was hired on as a substitute until something more permanent (but temporary) opened up. They were very flexible and supportive of my desire to work only until the baby came. After only a week of subbing, I was offered a part-time permanent (but temporary) position working in their infant classroom. The hours were great for me and I was thrilled to have some consistent work, but I was a little apprehensive about the idea of working with babies all day. After all, my experience had always been with preschoolers who are verbal and potty trained. Despite my reservations, I accepted the job and started the following day.

I believe with all my heart that there is a governing force on this earth called Divine Order. I believe that each thing that happens to us and for us is always moving us in the direction of our greatest good, whether we are aware of it or not. I certainly wasn't aware of it right away but this job I've been doing for the last 4 months was undoubtably Divinely Ordered. I was a newly pregnant, first-time mom with very little experience caring for infants, thrown into an environment were my sole responsibility was to care for infants. 9 to be exact, all ranging from 3 to 8 months old.

Through this job, I have come to learn that my patience is steadfast and my intuition is strong. I have said to Keane on numerous occasions, "Babe, I totally got this. One is going to be a piece of cake!" Most days I feel like Octomom, feeding two babies at once while rocking another in a swing with my foot. I have mastered the swaddle and learned which cry means I'm exhausted and which cry means I'm bored.

Blowout diapers, other women's breast milk and baby erections (it's true) don't phase me. Just a few days ago I had been feeding a baby his bottle on my lap for 30 minutes without realizing he had blown out each end of his diaper. When I got up to change him, I was left with poop smeared down both pant legs and no other clothes to change into. Then as an added bonus, he peed all over himself and me while I was cleaning him up. We quickly resorted to bath time in the sink at that point.

I am so grateful for this job and these experiences because they have given me confidence in my own innate instincts and abilities. They have prepared me for what is to come with our own babe and readied me for this life changing transition ahead.
